Social Media and Cyber Bullying

Press release

Fine Gael Local Candidate, Punam Rane holds a public meeting on Social media and Cyber Bullying.

Public meeting on Social media and Cyber Bullying was held at the Carlton Hotel, Tyrrelstown, Dublin 15 on Tuesday 2nd April at 7:30 pm.

The purpose of this public meeting is to look at the difference between the digital world and the real world and to provide information to parents. To discuss the challenges facing young people today and how parents could protect their children from online groomers and predators.

Guest speakers will include: Helena Murphy - Doctoral Researcher with the National Anti-Bullying Research and Resource Centre, DCU, Stephen Burke – Founder of Cyber Risk Aware and Radek Nowak, Manager - Cloud Infrastructure and Cybersecurity at eShopWorld

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Fine Gael Local Election candidate for Blanchardstown – Mulhuddart, Punam Rane, said “With the increasing number of devices our children use to connect, most young people have access to social media sites around the clock. Cyberbullying can have a really devastating effect on the victim. That’s where Parental Controls and Privacy Settings that will limit who can see their activity can help.”

Let’s look at some of the important steps required to keep identities of young people a secret from people they meet in the virtual world:

  1. Parents should be aware of the dangers and negative effects of social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat
  2. Parents can’t supervise every moment their kids are online on their own, this is where you need to apply appropriate parental controls and privacy setting are in place and ensure their online safety.
  3. Learn how to take action when confronted with online situations of cyberbullying which can have a devastating effect on your children.
